We describe metabolomics from microbial communities of western Lake Erie, a valuable model system for the impacts of nutrient cycling and microbial interactions on cyanobacterial blooms and secondary metabolites in freshwater ecosystems. We will assess the role of associated bacteria and viruses in cycling nutrients, exchanging metabolites, and influencing secondary metabolite production of these cyanobacteria.
